As 2023 is coming to an end, you are likely reminiscing on the year as well as looking forward to the year to come. One of the many ways that we like to celebrate the commencement of the New Year is to get together with family and friends to enjoy an adult beverage or two. However, you don’t want to start 2024 with dental issues from being careless. Here are some ways that you can enjoy your New Year’s party while keeping your smile safe!
Stay Away from Sugary Beverages
Sugar is a major risk factor when it comes to tooth decay. After all, the bacteria in your mouth thrive on sugar, so sipping on something too sweet will give them fuel. Instead, it is best to choose a drink that has a relatively low sugar content. For example, choosing a dry champagne over a sweet one can make a huge difference when it comes to your teeth. This also applies to other types of wine. For your smile, the dryer, the better!
Stay Hydrated
It may be easy to refill your glass of wine or grab another beer as soon as yours is empty. However, it is a better, and healthier idea to stay hydrated with a glass of water in between. Drinking alcohol can cause dehydration if you aren’t careful. This is bad for nearly every system in your body, including your smile. Dehydration causes a decrease in saliva flow. Instead of being washed away, the bacteria in your mouth cling to the enamel, increasing your risk of tooth decay!
Choose Light-Colored Drinks
Dark-pigmented beverages can cause your teeth to become stained over time. You may want to think twice before ordering a glass of sangria or red wine. Instead, choose something lighter in color, like a light beer or gin and tonic. This will help to prevent discoloration in the long run.
Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene
It might not be the new year quite yet, but this is the perfect time to get a head start on your New Year’s resolution of maintaining excellent oral hygiene! Start by brushing your teeth before you go out. The plaque and tartar on your teeth can easily attract red wine and other pigmented liquids, worsening your risk of staining. Remember to brush your teeth at least 30 minutes after your last beverage, as the acid from your drink weakens the enamel.
Have a great New Year’s Eve, but don’t forget to care for your smile. By using the tips listed above, you can start 2024 with beautiful, healthy pearly whites!
